Installing underfloor heating in listed buildings is never straightforward; these are spaces full of character, complexity and more often than not, unpredictability. One of the most transformative pairings we’ve seen in recent years is underfloor heating combined with air source heat pumps. Many clients, particularly those restoring listed homes, are seeking ways to reduce carbon emissions and future-proof their energy usage. The relationship between air source heat pumps and underfloor heating works well, especially because the underfloor heating systems operate at lower temperatures by adjusting pipe spacing, optimising zones, and carefully calculating outputs room by room. The result is consistent warmth across the home, even in larger, draughtier properties.

We’ve learned that success in listed buildings isn’t about pushing modern systems into old shells, it’s about adapting. Sometimes that means splitting areas into heating zones to work around fixed architectural features. Other times it means integrating secondary heating sources in areas where underfloor heating just isn’t practical. And often, it means collaborating closely with conservation teams, architects and builders to deliver an invisible upgrade that complements the building rather than fighting against it.
